Believe it or not, the 2nd graders (masterminds of the event) have been eagerly dreaming of purple peppers and striped tomatoes since Wednesday, January 10th, when we first started planning the Plant Sale and got to dive into the magic of Sow True Seed catalogs. They chose varieties in teams, often picking the most outrageous, hoping to entice even the blackest thumbs to give gardening a go. Among Team Tomato’s varieties are the fuzzy peach - ‘Garden Peach’, the almost white ‘Snowball’, and the massive red ‘Mortgage Lifter’. Seeds were shortly ordered and the surprisingly small box received with cheer unfelt since the holidays.
It all begged the question: how can we fulfill the promises of each amazing seed?! In February, we set to making our seeding calendar by finding out how long each plant takes to grow, and then counting weeks backward from our area’s last frost date. We taped the different vegetables to different weeks, and felt the sense of purpose and confidence that comes from having a plan. The 1st week of March our hands felt the cool potting soil in the greenhouse and began seeding cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and eggplant. We felt spring coming and haven’t looked back - parents and teachers have surely been eyeing our dirty nails since.
We watered, waited, and wished as our seedlings grew through March and April, filling the greenhouse with more and more trays of sprouts as our calendar prompts. We examined their roots yearning beyond the plastic “6 pack” and transplanted them into their final homes before being brought to yours. We are finishing this week by sticking the final pots with printed labels and a picture of its variety. From seed to final pot we have labeled to our best ability to ensure you won’t get an eggplant when you want basil, but if you do end up with a cherry tomato when you wanted a beefy one, please look kindly on us well-intentioned gardeners. We hope to see you next week!
