Beginning a New Year always give hopes for new ideas...a fresh start...a new beginning. Here in the OB School Library our New Year always begins with FUN new books and the OB selection of the Caldecott winners. The excitement always surrounds the new books we were able to purchase with Book Fair proceeds. We always ask during the book fair for our kid's recommendations for new books for our library and upon our return in January we have them ready to begin to go home! It's always so exciting for kids to get their hands on a new book they've been waiting for!
The Caldecott selection process in January is so much fun too! Our 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders, during their library class time, are given a selection of new picture books published in 2014 that are possible contenders for the upcoming award given for best illustrations in an American children's book. It is always so delightful to watch the kids critique the stories and pictures at their tables, conversations of why this one should or shouldn't get the award. They rate the books on a 1-5 star rating scale and we tally them at the end and wait and see if we have selected any of the same one's the committee has chosen. Last year we chose 3 of the same books they chose... It's all so very cool!!
So as we enter freshly into 2015, our library is all a "buzz" with book discovery and discussion. It is one of our favorite times of year... and I believe by the smiles on their faces, the depth of their conversations, and the excitement when they are in the library... it is fun for our kids too!! Happy 2015!!
