Our 5th and 6th graders read books from the MCBA (Massachusett's Children's Book Award) Nomination list from Salem State University and submitted their votes for the Massachusetts winner in March. This years over-all winner was The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. The Honor books selected were Space Case, The Nest, Fish in a Tree, and Roller Girl. Our MCBA readers will choose a free book at our upcoming Spring Book Fair for their efforts.
A select group of First Graders from Mrs. Ganser's and Ms. Bernat's classrooms have been coming up first thing in the morning to select independent reading books from the library. This is such an exciting time for them and the number of selected readers has been growing as we come into spring. When the kids meet and gather in the library it is as if a little 6 year-old Book Club has arrived. They speak to each other about what they liked or disliked about their reading choices last night, making recommendations to each other everyday. Such fun!
Our 2nd Graders are now masters at finding "Good Fit" books. Through the learning of finding books at their own personal level and in their interests it has fostered the true enjoyment of their reading. Finding favorite characters and returning to read entire series of their favorite books!
Kindergartners are reading! We had Poem in your Pocket Day in April and our kindergartners chose their favorite nursery rhyme to have in their pockets. The rhythm and familiarity helped them to read them in full on their own and the proud moments that came from these children was priceless!
Our 3rd Graders are busy little people but thankfully they have also found some time for reading :) Dork Diaries was a favorite for many and Weird But True books along with other funny jokes and facts were also favorites this year!
Overall we've had a very successful year here in the library. We are on the home stretch now with our upcoming Book Fair on May 21st and our push and campaign for Summer Reading after that. We have been blessed with many wonderful volunteers to read to our kids during library classes, this is such a welcome addition to our space.
Happy Reading and Happy Spring!
