Here in the library we are supporting the end of the year efforts to keep kids reading this summer. Our library will be closed, but we have joined forces with others in our community to help. Earlier in the year Mrs. Van Auken (OB school librarian) and Gina Patti (OB reading specialist) applied for a grant through the Cape Cod 5 Cents Savings Bank for help. We received the grant from Richard Leonard and were able to buy new books for give-aways to support our Title I students. Statistics from the NEA (National Education Association) states: "The more types of reading materials there are in the home, the higher students are in reading proficiency, according to the Educational Testing Service." We have magazines, novels, picture books, and non-fiction books avaiable for students in need who come in with their teachers to select summer reading materials.
We have also been working very closely with the children's librarians at the Oak Bluffs Public Library to help students get there own library cards and introduce them to the great summer programs they will have available in the coming months. Sonja and MJ (OB Public Librarians) have spoken to all of K-4 students about their summer reading program that offers incentives gifts for kids who read this summer. Each child will be coming home with an public library summer activity schedule and a reading log from their homeroom teachers.
The summer is an exciting time for sure ~ But please commit to helping your child find time to continue reading! Statistics show that when they have freedom to choose what they are reading it helps to foster the love of reading and increases their want for doing it. Magazines, comics, newspapers, THEY ALL COUNT... Please help your child visit the public library or visit your local book store, let them choose some fun reads and help carve out time in their day to sit with what they've chosen!
Have a wonderful summer!!! See you in September!
